Amritsar, December 4, 2024: The shocking attack on Sukhbir Singh Badal, former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister, at the Golden Temple has sparked widespread outrage across the political spectrum. Leaders from the Congress, BJP, and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) condemned the assassination attempt, with allegations of Khalistani involvement stirring further controversy.
Khalistani Extremism Alleged
Former Rajya Sabha MP Naresh Gujral, a senior leader from the SAD, linked the attack to Khalistani elements. “Today’s attack on moderate forces in Punjab points to extremist influences. Preliminary reports suggest Khalistani connections, and we believe foreign forces from Canada, Pakistan, and the U.S. may be involved,” Gujral said, demanding a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe.
He emphasized the need for swift action: “We need transparency in this investigation. Only by exposing those responsible can Punjab maintain peace and stability.”
Congress and BJP Criticize AAP’s Governance
Congress leaders also expressed outrage, holding the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) accountable. Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Congress Punjab chief, called the attack “100% government negligence.” He demanded action against police officials, particularly the Assistant Commissioner, for the alleged security lapse.
“This attack highlights the deteriorating law-and-order situation under AAP’s governance. Immediate steps must be taken to ensure accountability,” Warring said.
BJP National Secretary Manjinder Singh Sirsa echoed similar sentiments, criticizing the AAP government for its failure to safeguard religious sanctity. “The attack within the sacred premises of Sri Harmandir Sahib is a grave breach of security. This government has failed to protect citizens and maintain the dignity of holy sites,” Sirsa said in a video statement on X (formerly Twitter).
Political Unity Amid Criticism
Despite the criticism of AAP, opposition parties united in condemning the violent act. Samajwadi Party MP Ram Gopal Yadav called the incident “extremely sad,” while Congress Leader of the Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa labeled it “deeply unfortunate and unequivocally condemnable.”
Bajwa added, “Acts of violence undermine democratic values and societal harmony. Punjab needs vigilance and responsible discourse to avoid such incidents in the future.”
Police Response and Investigation
Amritsar Police Chief Gurpreet Singh Bhullar commended the officers’ quick response, which prevented any casualties. “The attacker has been apprehended, and we are investigating whether a deeper conspiracy exists,” Bhullar said, reinforcing that “adequate security arrangements” were in place.
Background of the Attack
The attack occurred while Sukhbir Singh Badal, 62, was performing religious penance at the Golden Temple, as ordered by the Akal Takht for past political missteps during his party’s governance (2007-2017). Narain Singh, the assailant from Gurdaspur, fired the shot around 9 a.m. but was quickly subdued by security personnel.
This attack has intensified concerns over growing extremist activities and highlighted the urgent need for stronger security measures in Punjab, particularly around religious sites.
